Overview

An applied programme — built around real data.

The CDS track is designed for early-career professionals who have a quantitative foundation and want to move into data-scientist roles. You'll finish the programme with a portfolio of three projects, an IABAC credential, and direct introductions to our hiring partners.

This is not a survey course. Every module ends in a hands-on deliverable, reviewed by a mentor. The final capstone is evaluated by an external panel drawn from industry.

Outcomes

What you'll be able to do.

01

Formulate a business problem as a well-posed predictive or causal question.

02

Build, evaluate, and compare regression and classification models end-to-end.

03

Design an experiment or quasi-experiment and defend the inference.

04

Ship a model to production with monitoring and fallback behavior.

05

Communicate methods and findings to a non-technical decision-maker.

06

Apply responsible-AI and data-protection principles to real workflows.

Syllabus · 6 modules · 24 weeks

What you'll learn.

A rigorous setup of the probability, statistics, and programming environment you'll rely on for the rest of the programme.

  • Probability distributions, sampling, and the central limit theorem
  • Hypothesis testing and confidence intervals in practice
  • Python for data — NumPy, Pandas, Matplotlib, Seaborn
  • Git, reproducible notebooks, and the lab environment
  • Lab: Cleaning and exploring a Kenyan mobile-money transaction dataset

The workhorse family of models — linear, generalized-linear, and their regularized variants — with emphasis on diagnostics.

  • OLS, assumptions, and residual diagnostics
  • GLMs: logistic, Poisson, and negative-binomial regression
  • Ridge, Lasso, and ElasticNet — when and why
  • Capstone 1: Predicting retail churn for a Nairobi grocery chain

Trees, forests, and gradient-boosted machines; the engines of most production ML systems in industry.

  • Decision trees and CART
  • Random forests, bagging, and feature importance
  • Gradient boosting — XGBoost, LightGBM, CatBoost
  • Imbalanced classes, calibration, and cost-sensitive learning

The methods that let you answer "what would happen if…" — the difference between a model and a decision.

  • Potential outcomes and the fundamental problem
  • Randomized experiments and A/B testing
  • Difference-in-differences, instrumental variables, regression discontinuity
  • Capstone 2: Evaluating a public-health intervention in Western Kenya

Models are only useful if they ship. This module covers deployment, versioning, and ongoing monitoring.

  • Model packaging with Docker and FastAPI
  • Data- and concept-drift monitoring
  • Retraining, shadow deployments, and rollback strategies
  • Cloud fundamentals — AWS / GCP / Azure essentials

A solo project scoped with an industry partner, defended before an external panel of practitioners.

  • Project scoping and problem definition
  • Implementation, evaluation, and deployment
  • Written technical report and business brief
  • Oral defense before an external panel

Tabs

Used for switching between related views — programme overview vs curriculum, or LMS course sections. The active indicator is a 2px flamingo underline. State is managed with the .active class on both button and panel.

The Overview tab shows high-level programme information — duration, format, accreditation, and who the programme is designed for.

The Curriculum tab renders the module accordion — each module is collapsible with topics, duration, and lab descriptions.

The Outcomes tab lists the six key competencies in a 2-column grid, with numbered indicators.

The FAQ tab reuses the same accordion pattern as the syllabus — consistent interaction throughout.

Our story

Started in Nairobi. Built for the continent.

AfriCDSA was founded in 2019 by a coalition of African data scientists, academics, and industry practitioners who shared a common frustration: African data talent was being trained on curricula imported wholesale from the global north — with case studies, examples, and problem framings that rarely matched the realities of African data environments.

We set out to change that. Our curriculum is rebuilt each year around African case data. Our faculty are practitioners who work across the continent's industries — from mobile money and agritech to public-health surveillance and central-bank analytics. Our research programme publishes openly, in the languages our stakeholders actually speak.

Seven years in, we've grown from one cohort of 18 students in Westlands to six locations across East and West Africa, with 4,200+ graduates and a consulting practice that advises ministries and enterprises across the region.

What we believe

Four principles that shape everything we do.

Principle 01

African data first.

Every capstone uses data drawn from the continent. Case studies are scoped with local partners.

Principle 02

Rigor over hype.

We teach methods that hold up under scrutiny — not the trending tool of the quarter.

Principle 03

Practice, not theory.

All faculty are active practitioners. Our graduates ship things — they don't just learn things.

Principle 04

Open by default.

Research is published openly. Curricula are shared with accredited partners at no cost.

What we do

Three service lines.

Each engagement is scoped to your context — not to a pre-built playbook. We bring methods developed for African data environments, not imported wholesale from elsewhere.

Service 01

Analytics Diagnostics.

A structured 6-week assessment of your organization's data maturity, infrastructure, and team capability — delivered as a prioritized 12-month roadmap.

  • Data-source audit & quality scoring
  • Team capability matrix
  • Infrastructure gap analysis
  • Prioritized 12-month roadmap
  • Executive presentation + working session
Service 02

Embedded Analytics Teams.

We place a cross-functional team — data engineer, analyst, and scientist — inside your organisation for 3 to 12 months, building systems and internal capability simultaneously.

  • 3–12 month engagements
  • Knowledge transfer from day one
  • Deliverables tied to business metrics
  • Internal team recruiting support
  • Optional continuation retainer
Service 03

Applied Research.

We commission, co-author, and publish policy-relevant research on data, AI, and analytics across African sectors — from mobile money to public health to agritech.

  • Commissioned research studies
  • Co-authored publications
  • Policy brief series
  • Stakeholder convenings & workshops
  • Open-access by default

How we work

A five-phase process.

Designed to build internal capability as much as deliver output — so you're not dependent on us once the engagement ends.

01

Scope

2-week discovery. Define the business question, data environment, and success metrics.

02

Diagnose

Audit existing data, infrastructure, and team. Identify the highest-leverage actions.

03

Build

Embedded team delivers systems, models, and dashboards in iterative two-week sprints.

04

Transfer

Intensive knowledge-transfer to internal team. Documentation, code handoff, and training.

05

Sustain

What clients say

Trusted by decision-makers.

"AfriCDSA refused to use off-the-shelf tools that don't fit African data environments. Everything was built for our reality. That made the difference between a report that sat on a shelf and one that changed how we allocate resources."

"Within three months of the diagnostic, we had a pipeline in production that had been on the roadmap for two years. The knowledge transfer was the part that surprised us most — our team can now maintain it independently."
